Yellowjackets: What happens to Ben in the Showtime thriller series? Character's fate explored

Showtime’s Yellowjackets is one of the superhit thriller dramas and narrates the story of a group of girls who were left stranded in a forest after a plane crash. The series focuses on their lives after they have come back to their lives in the city, but are still struggling with the memories of what they had become to survive in the forest.

Several of the characters died when they were staying in the forest, but the most shocking of them all was Coach Ben (Steven Krueger), who was the only surviving adult among the teenagers. He tried to maintain his authority initially, but lost his will and was mercy-killed by one of the girls.

After the crash, Coach Ben found himself with the other survivors and was the only adult. He was saved by the girls as Misty amputated his leg to save his life. While living and trying to survive in the forest, Coach Ben tried to be the adult among them by trying to prohibit them from certain activities, such as prohibiting them from drinking or trying to stop Laura Lee from flying the Cessna plane.

Aside from this, he was also uncomfortable about Misty’s advances toward him due to already being in a relationship with a man named Paul, which, initially, he only revealed to Natalie. He has seen the girls do everything and go too far to survive, from killing a bear to eating one of their own, Jackie, after trying to cremate her body. However, it's when he sees the girls making Natalie the queen that he leaves them altogether, resulting in the girls thinking he might be dead.

But his secret living in the cave is exposed when he lets Mari go after keeping her captive for a while to hide his survival from the girls. Mari reveals Coach Ben’s survival, and the girls then want to punish him for setting fire to the cabin in season 2 of Yellowjackets, before leaving, which he strongly denies doing.

Later in season 3 of Yellowjackets, Ben’s trial takes place and Taissa is chosen to execute him, but due to Akilah’s vision of him being the bridge to get them back home, the girls keep him captive in an animal pen. He loses his will to live and asks Natalie to kill him, but she refuses.

The group tries to keep him alive by force-feeding him when he goes on a hunger strike. His painful life comes to an end after Natalie mercifully kills him in episode 6 of Yellowjackets season 3.

While talking to Variety, Steven Krueger, who plays the character of Coach Ben Scott, revealed when he found out about his character’s death and said:

"Honestly, super early. It was kind of a rare experience. Oftentimes, when you know you have a character that is being killed off the show, you don’t really find out until right before, maybe like an episode or two before. That’s a long-standing protocol, I feel like, in the industry. This was a totally different experience."

He continued:

"I’m really grateful to our showrunners for giving us a head’s up: I think they did this with everybody who was going to meet their demise this season. They called us months before we started filming and said, “Hey, just a head’s up — this is the storyline that we’re planning."

After three successful seasons, Yellowjackets will be returning for a fourth season and will bring back more twisty tales about the survivors who are still grappling with their memories in the woods.
