The mystery of the Replicator, a serial murderer who had been following the BAU and reenacting their solved crimes, was eventually resolved in the suspenseful Season 8 conclusion of Criminal Minds. The unidentified suspect gave the terrifying impression that he knew everything about the squad by manipulating crime scenes to match earlier investigations throughout the season. The Replicator was identified in the conclusion as Mark Hamill's character, former FBI agent John Curtis.

Curtis wasn't some random foreigner. He previously worked with Erin Strauss, the BAU's Section Chief, on a high-profile Amerithrax investigation. After the lawsuit failed, both Curtis and Strauss faced sanctions, but although Strauss rose through the ranks again, Curtis fell behind. His anger against Strauss, and eventually the whole BAU, became the driving force for his intricate and lethal revenge.

In a well-planned attack, Strauss became his last victim. She was drugged and made to consume alcohol while staying at a hotel in New York, which was brutal given her history of addiction. Curtis employed a lethal mixture of chemicals that had been mentioned in one of the team's earlier research. Hotch eventually discovered Strauss, still alive but unable to recuperate, and he passed very soon after in his arms. Her passing had a profound personal and professional impact on the team.

Despite the tragedy, Strauss' intuition helped the crew find Curtis. She had been discreetly examining him and left a critical clue: a figure 8 cut into her wrist. This minor information was unrelated to any other cases, which helped the investigators understand the reality. They followed Curtis to a ranch in Virginia, where he had set traps and even kidnapped Agent Blake.

The last showdown in this Criminal Minds episode was ferocious. Curtis employed a pressure-sensitive device to trap the squad, but Rossi outsmarted him. Rossi used Strauss' sobriety as a distraction, trapping Curtis inside the explosive-rigged chamber. The subsequent explosion was huge, implying Curtis had perished, however, his body was not revealed, creating an air of mystery.

A homage to Strauss concluded the segment. Instead of celebrating as in past finales, the squad came together to pay tribute to a friend and coworker. Rossi's parting remarks served as a reminder of the BAU's power and cohesion. The Criminal Minds crew underwent a sea change once Strauss passed away, bringing to light the true emotional toll of their labor and establishing a somber tone for Season 9.
