TNT’s The Librarians franchise is growing bigger with the addition of the spin-off series The Librarians: The Next Chapter. The fantasy-adventure franchise has been going on since 2004 and already has four television films and one show under its name.

One thing has remained common in all these previous outings: the lead Flynn Carsen has been played by Noah Wyle. However, The Pitt actor is not reprising his role in the new spin-off, and the show instead focuses on a different set of characters.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter showrunner Dean Devlin has now talked about why Noah Wyle is not a part of the show. As per ScreenRant, Devlin revealed that Wyle is still involved in the project as a producer and would return to the franchise if the original series gets a revival:

“Well, he is a producer on the show, so he's involved, but I think that he's holding out to actually be The Librarian again in either a movie or if we get a chance to revive the original series.”

Noah Wyle debuted the titular role of Flynn Carsen in the 2004 TNT film The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. The original film revolved around Flynn, who was hired to work at a library. However, he soon realized that it was not a normal place and actually housed magical artifacts, which he needed to protect.

Wyle then reprised his roles in the 2006 and 2008 sequels, The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines and The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice, respectively. In 2014, the films got their first spin-off series, and Wyle once again showed up as Flynn Carsen. The series aired for four seasons till 2018.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter, however, follows different characters. As per Dean Devlin, the series is set in the same universe as the films and the previous show but tells a fresh story. It revolves around Vikram Chamberlain, a time-traveling librarian who gets stuck in the present, leading to chaos in his life.

The first season of the show premiered on May 25, 2025, and is set to feature 12 episodes. Meanwhile, a second season has already been greenlit by TNT. Devlin also serves as an executive producer on the project along with Rachel Olschan-Wilson, Noah Wyle, and Marc Roskin.

The show stars Callum McGowan as Vikram Chamberlain, Jessica Green as Charlie Cornwall, Bluey Robinson as Connor Green, Olivia Morris as Lysa Pascal, Caroline Loncq as Elaine Astalot, and Christian Kane as Jacob Stone.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter airs new episodes on TNT on Sundays.
