CBS premiered NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 on October 14. NCIS, the popular military police procedural, is the network's third-longest-running scripted, live-action prime-time TV series currently airing. The success of the show has paved the way for many spin-off shows.

NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 titled Prodigal Son I was a highly anticipated hour in the procedural, which followed Agent Parker as he went to extreme measures to catch his father's killer, Carla Marino. The new season began in the aftermath of the Season 22 finale, where Parker and team were on a hunt for Carla, who had fled after murdering Parker's father.

The hunt for the killer continued in the Season 23 premiere. While Parker was unable to catch Carla yet, the episode put him on a ship with the killer in its final moments. Here's all about that shocking cliffhanger, which will likely be resolved in Part II.

Here is the complete NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 recap.

NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 began in the aftermath of Parker's father's death, with McGee, Jess and Torres hunting for Carla with him. While the team is working on their plan of action, Parker asks them to think out of the box, as Carla is always two steps ahead of them. McGee is informed about multiple bomb threats in the area, which have resulted in the shutdown of all transit lines. Since this would incapacitate Carla significantly, McGee worries that this is Parker's doing.

Back at NCIS headquarters, the team discovers that Carla's SUV has been flagged in relation to the crime scene and has also shown up at their evidence lab. Vance tells Parker that Homeland is taking him off the case in NCIS Season 23 Episode 1, as his proximity can be dangerous. Additionally, the NCIS team is pulled off and the case is directed to the FBI.

McGee, Jess and Torres arrive at Parker's house and assure him that they will continue working on his father's case in their capacity. The team hit the jackpot with two leads. Firstly, Carla's SUV leads them to the fake Agent Ford badge she used in the act. It turns out that Torres recognized the forger from the badge, who gave them a useful tip. Secondly, McGee and Kasie head out to find the fake Ford, who was holed up in a hiding spot.

While the fake Agent Ford was an important lead in NCIS Season 23 Episode 1, the man was kidnapped. McGee, Kasie, Parker and Torres were present when it happened. While the team could not stop the kidnappers, Torres placed a tracker in the truck and they managed to reach the location where Ford was taken.

The team finally found Ford and questioned him about Parker's father's murder. He confirmed that Carla had killed him with Parker's weapon. He also gives them a big lead about a ship called Quinton, which is Carla's last jackpot and is ready to leave soon.

NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 ended on a deadly cliffhanger

The team learned that the ship had left port 25 minutes ago and is now heading into the waters. A camera footage shows Carla boarding the ship. While Parker had pretended to go home, the team discovered that he had tracked the ship and had managed to board with Carla.

In the final moments of NCIS Season 23 Episode 1, Harriet informs the team that they believe Carla's ship is carrying weapons and dr*g. She has straight orders from her commanding Admiral to take the vessel out before it crosses International waters. Since the ship is a huge threat to the country, they cannot allow it to pass. While she knows Parker is aboard, her hands are tied and she gives the order to fire away at the vessel.

NCIS Season 23 Episode 1 concludes on this deadly cliffhanger, with Parker's life hanging in the balance.
