Ballard, the next show from the Bosch universe, is set to premiere on Prime Video on July 9, 2025. The official synopsis of the show, as mentioned in Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
“Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly's bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD's new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination.”
The synopsis further mentions,
“As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer's string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”
As Maggie Q will be leading the series, she did not discard the possibility of the Bosch allums making an appearance in Ballard. In an interview with Collider, Maggie said,
“I'm sure they want to move on and do different things in their career, but if any of them wanted to come on and support this effort, I would be all on board.”
She further added that they had really done a great job and it would be fun to get to work with them.
Ballard might feature some Bosch alums
Besides Maggie Q, Michael Connelly, the series creator and the man behind Bosch has hinted at the same possibility of past characters returning to Ballard. Since the new series deals with cold cases, it provides the perfect and logical chance to revisit old characters, which can include both friends and enemies.
Talking about the same, Connelly said, as reported by Collider,
“It does borrow from Bosch; Bosch is even in it from time to time. But the face of the show is Maggie Q, and we wanted her to run with it, and be her own person, and have her own show.”
He further added,
“We just didn't want to extend Bosch and do the same thing... We wanted to build this for long-term success. We wanted to be a show that stood on its own feet… It’s its own entity.”
Therefore, while the possibility of witnessing Harry Bosch is not completely out of the question, he is probably not going to make regular appearances. Besides him, characters like Maddie Bosch and Honey Chandler can also be featured in the series given their current professional positions.
However, as said by the creator himself, Ballard remains a show focusing on Detective Renée Ballard and therefore the center stage will be taken by Maggie Q only.
Ballard will be streaming on Prime Video upon its release.
