Gilmore Girls makes us think of the cozy little town of Stars Hollow whenever we hear the show's name. There was no dearth of interesting characters who had their own quirkiness. The town was not itself without Luke and the series made that clear. He was the problem solver of the town.

Played by Scott Patterson, the man was grumpy and lovable at the same time. Luke ran the town’s go-to diner and had a soft spot for Lorelai Gilmore even if he spent half the time pretending he didn’t. He was the guy who always showed up when things got tough. And fans saw how deeply he cared for both Lorelai and Rory even if he didn’t express much.

Gilmore Girls became one of the most beloved shows in pop culture. And Patterson continued to stay connected to it. He has revisited the series several times through interviews and his podcast I Am All In.

He surprised fans when he shared what he really thought about Rory Gilmore’s boyfriends. He called Dean, Jess, and Logan "bums". Well, it might sound harsh but he made some fair points. None of them were right for Rory according to Patterson. Here his opinion is the same as Luke. It comes from the same protective place Luke would have spoken from if he were real.

Gilmore Girls: “He’s out of his head and angry” - Scott Patterson’s take explained

Scott Patterson said in an interview with E! News:

“He’s out of his head and angry. And maybe he resolved it now that he's older, but it's going to crop up again.”

He was talking about Jess Mariano. He was one of Rory’s most popular love interests on Gilmore Girls. Jess was the rebellious and misunderstood guy who brought some spark to Rory's life. But he was complicated.

Patterson saw Jess through Luke’s eyes. And from that point of view, Jess was someone who had a lot of unresolved anger. That’s what Patterson meant by his comment. He wasn’t attacking the character but was actually recognizing the instability Jess had within him.

And this makes sense for anyone who’s watched Gilmore Girls. Jess came to Stars Hollow as Luke’s nephew. He was full of resentment and defiance. He clashed with everyone. Even with Luke who took him in and tried to set him straight. Over time, Jess matured. But as Patterson pointed out, those internal issues don’t just vanish. Luke values peace and responsibility. So it’s understandable why Patterson didn’t see Jess as an ideal partner for Rory.

Patterson’s honesty reflects how many fans have felt before but never said out loud. Gilmore Girls had some of the most talked about relationships on TV. People still argue about which boyfriend was the best. But Patterson’s comments tell us that beneath all the nostalgia, these were imperfect young people still figuring themselves out.

Even years later, Scott Patterson talks about Gilmore Girls like someone who never really left Stars Hollow, and honestly, neither did we.
