Episode 7 of Rick & Morty Season 8 introduced one of the biggest surprises by bringing James Gunn and Zack Snyder in guest roles. The episode titled Ricker than Fiction narrates the story of Rick and Morty confronting James Gunn in his office about destroying their favorite franchise film.
While talking to Variety, EP Scott Marder shared how they were cooperative and thrilled to be a part of Rick & Morty Season 8. He stated:
"They were good sports. Both of those guys sort of implied that this is the show they watch when they have downtime. So they were thrilled to get to be a part of the world, and there was no pushback or bristling."
He continued:
"If anything, they laughed at anything we threw at them. There were probably, frankly, even more digs and more silly things we could have used. All they did was laugh it off."

Rick & Morty Season 8: James Gunn and Zack Snyder appear in a hilarious cameo in episode 7
In the episode of Rick & Morty Season 8, Rick and Morty teleport to Gunn’s office. After confronting him, they use Rick’s Movie-lizer to change the story and impress Gunn and Warner Bros. with it.
But the surprise is not just James Gunn, as Zack Snyder also appears when the two meet at the cafeteria of their office. Their conversation is another highlight of the episode, as Snyder gives advice to Gunn about Superman and tells him that the character should talk less. He says:
"Just saw your new cut of 'Superman.' Word of advice, he's the 'Man of Steel,' not the 'Man of Conversation.' Do more shots of him punching!"
This might be one of the funniest yet crucial conversations as Gunn’s Superman is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
In the same interview, Marder also talked about how excited he was for the episode, as fans would be excited. He said:
"I’m excited for the fans to get this one. I feel like they’re always hungry for classic ‘Rick and Morty’ episodes, ones that feel like a fun plug-and-play, episode-of-the-week. This one feels like it checks that box in a big way, but then has fun surprises."
Marder also talked about how Gunn was their first choice to play the villain when they thought about including their bosses, and how Gunn helped in speeding up the process of making the episode. He shared:
"I think Gunn called people over him to make sure that this wasn’t going to mess anything up. And it looked like he got the green light pretty quickly. They both came in and were really good sports. I’m a very proud nerd, I idolize both these guys. They’ve got creative freedom very few people have in Hollywood to take big swings."
Another reason for the episode’s success also lies in how the cameos were kept a secret until they appeared on screen. This helped in bringing the excitement of the Rick & Morty Season 8 episode to another level.
