Mira Nair, the famous producer, director, and writer, is making headlines again. But this time, it is because of her son, Zohran Mamdani, as he is running for the office of mayor of New York City. The issue at hand is the $2 million apartment that Mira used to own in New York, and many people are claiming that this goes against the message her son is standing for.
Zohran claims to be a democratic socialist. He has spoken a great deal about helping poor people, taxing the rich, and defeating big landlords. However, the disclosure that his mother used to own a very expensive home in Manhattan has had social media users calling him a “nepo baby” and saying he is not one of the people.
Mira Nair’s early life and work in film
Mira Nair was born in 1957 in a small town in India called Rourkela. She initially studied at Delhi University and later got a scholarship to go to Harvard in the United States, where she started making short films and documentaries. Her early films showed real people and real problems. One of her first big works was Salaam Bombay!, which won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for the Oscar.
After that, Mira Nair made more films. One of them was Mississippi Masala, with Denzel Washington. Another was Monsoon Wedding, which became very popular. Apart from making films, Mira was actively involved in non-profit engagements, including being the founder of Salaam Baalak Trust, which deals with street children.
In Uganda, Mira opened a film school for young African directors. It’s called Maisha Film Lab. She also taught film at Columbia University in New York.
Over time, Mira gained popularity for her films, and in 2008, she bought an apartment in Chelsea, a rich part of Manhattan. She later sold it in 2019. A New York Post publication alleges that it is worth about $2 million today.
Why has Mira's house stirred controversy online?
Mira Nair's son, Zohran Mamdani, is running for the position of mayor of New York City. He already works as a lawmaker in the city. He talks a lot about helping renters, stopping evictions, and taxing the very rich. He says public buses should be free and food should be cheaper.
But after the news about his mother’s expensive apartment came out, people started asking questions. Multiple top publications have covered how people are questioning whether his family had so much money, and how he can speak for poor people. Some feel he is pretending to be someone he is not, and they are calling him "nepo baby".
As per the reports by the New York Post, he also owns land in Uganda worth about $250,000. Moreover, his team says he lives in a small rent-controlled apartment in Queens. They say he is still connected to everyday New Yorkers.
