2 Chainz claims Birdman wanted a lot of money from artists who wanted to work with Lil Wayne.
During his recent guest appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay, 2 Chainz spoke of Birdman's charges for working with Lil Wayne, who was signed to the pair's Cash Money Records:
“If anybody wanted Wayne, [Birdman] would be like, ‘I need 100 too,’ and people would obviously do it,” 2 Chainz said.
Birdman discovered Lil Wayne back in 1993, and the latter signed with his and Chainz's record label around the same time, at the age of 11. He remained there until June 2018.
Birdman, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz's relationship dynamics explored:
Speaking with Shannon Sharpe, 2 Chainz said he had to work around Birdman's intense demands, noting that he once purchased a pair of red Gucci shoes for Wayne because “he represents the red team.”
“I take them to him at the studio. He don’t know I’m about to take it to him, but I also got a beat CD,” he recalled. “And I’m not doing this for the other thing but I just take it to him and he like … ’Damn, these harder than a b*tch.’
2 Chainz said he then gave the veteran rapper the beat CD. Not long after Wayne shifted to Miami following Hurricane Katrina, he invited 2 Chainz to Florida:
“We go from the airport to the mall because he is trying to I guess show his appreciation for me buying him shoes,” 2 Chainz said. “Then out the blue, he says, ‘What you thought about the hook I did for you?’”
Chainz, legally known as Tauheed K. Epps, said he had no idea what Wayne was talking about. That's when the latter revealed that he had his manager email the track he had written to Epps, but it got delivered to the wrong email. The two then set out for the studio, where Wayne played the song for Epps.
“I remember at that particular time knowing what a hit sounded like,” 2 Chainz said. “I said, ‘Man, you did that for me?’ He like, ‘Yeah boy.’” He added, “When Wayne did that, he didn’t charge me … so it’s only going to be just 100, not 200. Baby still wanted his 100.”
Complex has reported that the song eventually went on to become the massive hit debut song of Playaz Circle, Duffle Bag Boy, which dropped in 2007.
Back in January 2015, Lil Wayne sued Cash Money Records and its owners for $51 million, claiming misappropriation. He also accused them of going back on an $8 million of a $10 million advance payment for his album Tha Carter V.
