Singer JoJo Siwa’s relationship with Chris Hughes gained much public attention, mostly because of her sexuality. The Boomerang singer used to identify herself as lesbian but now prefers to call herself queer. According to an exclusive report by E!News from June 14, 2025, she said:
"I think the most beautiful term now is queer. I think queer is an umbrella of, ‘Look, I’m just me.’ And I think the most beautiful thing about the LGBTQIA community is love is love. And that goes both ways.”
Siwa went on:
"There’s loads of beautiful, different sexualities. Sexuality and queerness is a lovely rainbow that has all different places. And it also has places on this rainbow that we don’t even know exist yet."
JoJo Siwa shared that during her time with Chris Hughes, she never doubted her feelings for him, which made her feel happy and secure. She felt completely content and at peace with where she was in life.
According to her, the love she experienced felt genuine and natural, and she believed that people can't control who they fall in love with, and there was no correct way to be oneself.
During her time in Celebrity Big Brother, JoJo Siwa shared that she used to identify as a lesbian, but after spending time in a certain environment, she came to understand that the label "queer" felt more accurate for her. She found this realization exciting and described it as a shift in how she saw herself.
JoJo Siwa never thought she could have a friendship with Chris Hughes
Siwa recently spoke to Billboard, sharing that it was unbelievable to think that just a month earlier, she couldn’t have imagined even being friends with Chris Hughes. Now, he had become one of the most important people in her life, someone she deeply cared about.
JoJo Siwa found it difficult when others criticized or misunderstood their bond. For her, forming connections with people and genuinely getting to know them mattered a lot. When someone new entered her life and brought happiness, she could feel and appreciate that.
The singer had previously told The Guardian that what she felt for Chris Hughes was not only platonic. She said:
"It’s not platonic anymore, and it’s been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I’m absolutely head over heels for him and he’s the same way."
Concerning how she came to terms with her sexuality, JoJo Siwa told Billboard:
"I think for me I realized, ‘Whoa I am in a box that I am not even meant to be in.’ You know what I mean? I have dated beautiful women. I have dated beautiful non-binary people. I have dated men but I'm like I realize that's just who I am, you know what I mean. And I realize for myself that I just like human."
She said one is free to love whoever they want. The singer appeared on one of the episodes of the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast recently. Siwa explained that her connection with Chris Hughes began as a simple friendship, and they got along easily.
Neither of them planned to develop deeper feelings, but they enjoyed spending time together. She said whenever one of them felt low, the other was there to offer support and lift their spirits.
