Amerie announces divorce with husband Lenny Nicholson after 19 years of marriage

American singer, actress, and writer, Amerie Mi Marie Rogers Nicholson, has revealed that she and her long-time husband are going through a divorce. Since Amerie has kept her private life under wraps the majority of the time, the news of her divorce came as a shock to many. Mrs. Nicholson divulged the news to the audience while she was on the music podcast, Way Up With Angela Yee.

Amerie and Lenny Nicholson started dating in 2007. He was her manager and a Sony Music executive. The couple announced their engagement three years into their relationship on February 27, 2010. They got married the following year on June 25, 2011. Seven years later, the couple welcomed their first child, River Rowe Charles L. Nicholson.

The Taking Control singer and her husband were together for 19 years before they called it quits. The singer only brought it up after Angela Yee asked her if her relationship's status was "locked in."

During the Way Up With Angela Yee, the host mentioned Amerie's relationship and how the singer has been "locked in" for a very long time, 19 years to be exact. However, Yee did not expect Nicholson to say:

"I was but not now."

The 1 Thing singer briefly explained what she meant by that. She said that she and her husband are going through a divorce, and the media, including her fans, did not know about it because:

"Not everyone knows that."

In her words, the singer-songwriter said:

"We're going through the divorce, but we've been separated since 2023."

After the shocking revelation, Yee proceeded to ask Nicholson if she is open to dating and meeting someone new. To this, the singer responded simply by saying that she is:

"Figuring it out."

What has Amerie been up to so far in 2025?

The 1 Thing singer took more than six years away from making music before releasing her latest single, Mine, in 2025. The last single she released before Mine was A Heart's for the Breaking in 2019. Mine was released on March 28 this year, via her own label, 'Amerie Inc.'

Last year, she announced that she was working on her next album. Many speculate that Mine is one of the tracks from her sixth studio album. The Pretty Brown singer shared a tidbit about her upcoming album. She said:

"I wanted the album to soundtrack a great love. I wanted the album to feel like what it is to be in love or make a person who isn't want to be fully and completely in love."
