On General Hospital, Rick Hearst (Ric Lansing) and Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) have been playing battling brothers on and off for decades.

After Ric’s recent stay in captivity at Alexis’s (Nancy Lee Grahn) house, which brought back memories of the famous story long ago when Ric kept Sonny’s then-pregnant wife Carly (Laura Wright) in a panic room, the lawyerly brother in the relationship has done some soul-searching.

Recently, Ric and Sonny have decided to try being friends again. They had a memorable and chaotic time together recently, when their conversation went to the dogs. Literally, when Emma (Braedyn Bruner) and Gio (Giovanni Mazza) brought several dogs to Sonny’s house from Henry Dalton’s (Daniel Goddard) abandoned lab.

Ric and Sonny had a lot of fun with that even when Ric was mad about Gio and Emma breaking the law to get the dogs.

But Hearst is happy about the new direction in his character’s relationship with his brother. Hearst discussed that in a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest.

“I was thrilled,” Hearst said. “Whenever we get an opportunity to work together, we’re both thrilled, honestly. I texted him when I saw that first script and I said, ‘Bro, we get to work together! I’ll see you on Monday,’ or whatever day it was going to be. And he texted me back, very short and sweet. He just says, ‘I can’t wait.'”

The General Hospital actor said he and Benard work very well together, they trust each other, and Benard helps him when he has trouble remembering his lines. He talked a lot about how they prepare for scenes together.

“If there’s any opportunity for the development of this character to go into a new chapter, and have that chapter involve his history with Sonny, I’m all-in,” he told SOD.

Hearst spoke a lot about Sonny’s relationship with Jason Morgan on General Hospital (Steve Burton) and reminisced about past scenes when Ric and Jason had tense arguments. Hearst feels that Ric is jealous of that bond between Sonny and his best friend.

Hearst feels that his character wants to bond with his half brother because of their connection to their mother, the late Adela Corinthos. Hearst spoke a lot about this in the interview.

“Sonny is the only living connection that he has with his mother, their mother, and I think that’s sort of the missing piece for him at this point,” Hearst said.
