The festival is sponsored by Amazon. The festival's upcoming edition will be its 25th edition overall, having been first held in 1998. The festival has mostly been held at the Estadio GNP Seguros (formerly known as Foro Sol) throughout its history and was founded by Grupo CIE (OCESA), which also operates the venue Estadio GNP Seguros, among other major venues in the country.
The festival was founded with the goal of providing space for bands and artists from the Spanish and Portuguese-language-speaking regions of America, collectively known as the Iber-Americas. The original concept has since then expanded to include some non-Iberian American bands, including artists from the US and elsewhere.
Previous performers at the festival include Café Tacuba and Aterciopelados, as well as some acts that are returning for the upcoming edition, including Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas, Los Amigos Invisibles, and more. Other notable previous performers include Twenty One Pilots, The National, Screaming Headless Torsos, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and so on.
Vive Latino is one of the major festivals of the region, with previous editions having experienced crowd counts as high as about 80,000 people. Its counterparts include festivals such as Corona Capital, Bahidora, Ceremonia, and more. Corona Capital was also founded by Grupo CIE (OCESA) and is still run by it.
Vive Latino has a tradition of being inclusive of diverse music genres, instead of being limited to a set of them. The festival has featured performances by metal, rock, reggae, disco, jazz, acid, and hip-hop in its past editions.
