Andy (Theron) is back in the saddle, picking up things right where the first film left us. She doesn't need to defy Merrick's evil plot, but has even bigger fish to fry. The sequel shows her getting confronted by Discord (Thurman), the first-ever immortal, who is hellbent on breaking Andy's Guard for her mission against the mortals.

For this mission, Discord enlists Quynh (Ngo), who is out to get Andy, fueled by vengeance for abandoning her in a state of eternal resurrection deep underwater. All that torture makes Quynh furious at the mortals, much like Discord. That's why she joins hands with Discord. As it happens, the Guard brings in Tuah (Golding), an immortal with a deep knowledge of their history and origins.

It leads him to deduce that Nile (Layne) is the "last immortal," which endows her with the power to take away someone else's immortality. He also makes the Guard realize that immortals can transfer their regenerative ability by willfully sacrificing themselves. That's how Booker (Schoenaerts) loses his life for Andy's immortality. It's also because he was tired of being an immortal and wanted to rest after endless fights.

What happens at the end of The Old Guard 2?

Toward the end of The Old Guard 2, Discord abducts Nile and the rest of the Guard, apart from Andy. She also reveals her true intentions: to shed them of their immortality so she can regain hers. That is potentially why she used Quynh as bait to get to Andy. However, upon reconciliation, Quynh decides to switch sides and reunite with her old lover.

The final moments of the film end abruptly, with Andy and Quynh determined to fight against Discord to save humanity. Earlier, Quynh was not on board with Andy's mission and was enraged by Andy's apparent betrayal, even though Andy didn't have the resources to save her from her misery. While reuniting with her, Andy loses Nile, Tuah, Joe (Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

The cliffhanger ending of the sequel is enough to make fans hopeful for a third installment in this adrenaline-pumping franchise. Unfortunately, director Mahoney cannot offer a definitive answer whether it will return for another chapter or not. During her recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she spoke about it.

"I genuinely don't know. I don't know what's going on outside this room. So I have no idea. I hope for it, and I hope that audiences get it, and I hope everyone that goes to play on that third one has a ball and kicks a** and I'll be rooting for them. I won't be there, but I will be rooting for them. Sincerely, vigorously," Mahoney said.
