Sean Astin is an American actor and the president of the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, also known as SAG-AFTRA. During a recent run-in with Astin, TMZ asked the actor what his thoughts are regarding OpenAI's newest AI video generator, Sora 2.
He responded by saying:
"Everybody knows that the AI technology is a tsunami that's washing over us. But those who are in a position of leadership to try and put in some guardrails. We see what's happening and we know what to do."

Sean Astin's advice on keeping the usage of OpenAI's Sora 2 in check
Sean Astin also expressed his thoughts to TMZ on keeping the usage of OpenAI's Sora 2 in check. He elaborates further, saying:
"It starts with our bargaining with our bosses, saying to the company, 'Hey, you got to agree not to do this and not to do that if you want us to keep working with you.'"
Astin added by saying the government also has its work cut out for it on placing restrictions. In his words:
"And then, it's the government. The government has to say, you know, it's illegal. Right now, Governor Newsom, he signed one today, and we're hoping he signs another one today that would make it criminal to steal someone's information."
He continued to say:
"Opt out is ridiculous. Opt out is they do whatever they want, and if you happen to catch them, they go, 'Oh, well if you don't want to be a part of it you didn't really tell us soon enough, so you know, tough luck on that, and I guess in the future we won't use it.'"
Sean Astin strongly believes that taking whatever you can find on the internet that belongs to another individual without their consent is a form of "lawlessness." He believes extracting someone's work from a movie or studio network should be stopped.
In his words:
"But what we have to stop is the lawlessness of people just taking anything they can find from the internet, anything they can put from any movie, any studio network. All from the beginning of time and just shove it in there and be like, 'Oh, hey, well we can't tell.'"
The reporter said that people are having fun with OpenAI's Sora 2 and asked if Astin did not want them to have too much fun. The president of SAG-AFTRA replied, saying:
"No, people can have fun. They just, you know, you can have fun waving around a loaded gun too. Let's not do that."
He concluded by saying:
"Let's let the exciting piece of technology be used with permission of the people they're borrowing it from. I got a metaphor or an analogy for you: 'You can break into a jewelry store. You can break the case. You can spread all the diamonds on the floor, and you can make the prettiest picture ever, right? You designed that but they're not your f**king diamonds."
Sean Astin believes that while AI tools like OpenAI's Sora 2 are exciting, they need clear boundaries. He strongly emphasized that creators deserve protection and that "opt out" policies are not enough when it comes to using someone's work without their consent. In the end, Astin is not against innovation, but he just wants fairness and respect for the people behind the art.
