According to reports shared by People and the Daily Mail, Heather Graham once dated actors Josh Lucas and Heath Ledger. She also spent time with someone completely outside of the entertainment world. In the years that followed, Heather Graham seemed to drift away from Hollywood’s usual dating scene. She eventually found companionship with John de Neufville, a snowboarder known for keeping his life out of the spotlight.

Among her past relationships, her time with Heath Ledger stood out the most. It had been seventeen years since Ledger’s passing, and Heather Graham still spoke about him with a quiet kind of affection. Ledger, born in Australia, died suddenly at the age of twenty-eight on January 22, 2008. Authorities later ruled his death an accident.

“I feel proud that I dated him,” Graham said during the October 13 episode of Are You a Charlotte? podcast, reflecting on their relationship from 2000. Host Kristin Davis, who shared the conversation with her, remembered seeing the two of them together many years ago.

“I think I was at a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, possibly on Sunset Blvd., and I think you were there. And I think you were there with Heath Ledger,” Davis recalled.

Graham confirmed the memory.

“Yes, I dated him. I think we might’ve watched the show together and I think he actually really liked it.”

Heather Graham revealed that Heath Ledger watched Sex and the City with her around the time she appeared on the HBO series. The actress played herself in two episodes between 2002 and 2003, while Kristin Davis starred as Charlotte York throughout the full run of the show and its later films.

“I remember us watching it and him saying, ‘I can relate to this,’” Heather Graham said, recalling Ledger’s reaction to the iconic series. Davis, who hosted the podcast conversation, admitted she was surprised that SATC had been on Ledger’s radar, especially after seeing the couple together years ago in Los Angeles.

“At the time you two were just this ray of light in this Coffee Bean, you were kinda giggly and touching each other. I was like, [gasp sound]. I was like, ‘Hold it together.’ You were cute,” shared Kristin Davis.

She went on to explain why she didn’t approach them that day.

“I should not have been shy, but also I felt protective like I didn’t want to call attention to you. Because you seemed very free,” explained Kristin Davis.

Heather Graham immediately understood.

“I was very in love with him when we dated, he’s kinda amazing,” she replied.

Heather Graham later reflected on Ledger’s death with visible emotion.

“I wish he was still alive. That would be nice,” she said quietly. “[But] some of these really bright lights don’t get to live so long.”

Us Weekly reported that Heath Ledger was found dead inside his New York City apartment after his housekeeper and massage therapist entered in the late afternoon. Years later, filmmaker Stephen Gaghan publicly discussed a project they had been preparing together, a film based on Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. Ledger was slated to star, but after his sudden death, the film was never made.

Speaking on the Developmental Hell podcast in February 2024, Stephen Gaghan remembered getting an unexpected phone call from Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, and one of the actor’s close friends.

“They were there with the body and our script was in bed with him, and your book was on the bedside table,” Gaghan told Gladwell.
“I think my number was on the script, like, written. These guys, as you can imagine, they are in shock, and they dialed that number, and I don’t know why,” he added.

Gaghan said he was sitting at an airport with his wife, Minnie Mortimer, when the call came through.

“The emotion, what they were going through, I should not have been a party to in any way really, and yet as a human or as somebody who just cares, I just was there and I was listening and my wife was looking at me. I remember her face and I was just like, I was speechless. I just listened and listened and listened. It was just really, really sad. And it’s still sad,” he shared.

Even years later, Heather Graham's words serve as a reminder of the impact Heath Ledger had on those around him. Though their time together was brief, the memories she shares capture the light, talent, and warmth he brought into the world, a legacy that continues to shine long after his passing.
