Australian actress Rachael Carpani, most known for her work on McLeod's Daughter, has died at the age of 45.

Her sister, Georgia, announced her demise in a statement on Instagram, citing "chronic illness" as the reason. As of this writing, further details remain scarce, and she asked for privacy for her fans.

The late actress portrayed Jodi Fountain on the hit Australian drama television series. She stayed with the show for 179 episodes across all eight of its seasons, from 2001 to 2009. Created by Posie Graeme-Evans and Caroline Stanton, the show boasts several awards, including for Most Popular Australian Drama Series at the 2005 Logie Awards.

Rachael Carpani's untimely demise explored as tributes trickle in:

In Georgia's statement on Instagram, signed on behalf of her and Rachael Carpani's parents, Tony and Gael, she said that the actress

"unexpectedly but peacefully passed away after a long battle with chronic illness, in the early hours of Sunday 7th December. The family requests privacy at this very difficult time and will be making no further statements."

McLeod's Daughters co-star Bridie Carter has since expressed her condolences in a statement on Instagram. She said that Rachael Carpani

"Rest in Peace our beautiful girl....the "baby" of our MD family..... We love you, we cherish you.... This is the wrong order of things. We are better people for having the privilege of sharing time with you..." She said that the late actress "is loved and will be missed by you all, around the world. We love you Carpani. We miss you Rach. May your blessed spirit, so vivid, so full of life, generosity, unique talent, energy, fervour, intelligence, resilience, courage and great humour, and a gentle humility, may you rest in peace."

The late actress joined a new Australian show, Home and Away, just last year. At the time, she told TV Week that she was eager to be a part of the cast.

“I feel it’s something of a full-circle moment for me,” she said. “I started out on an iconic Australian show [McLeod’s Daughters], I did my stint overseas, and now I’m back home and on an iconic show – I feel very, very lucky.”

Rachael Carpani also said that her work with Home and Away was over two decades in the making:

“Not that they’ve been offering me roles for that long,” she joked, “but the idea has popped up ever since McLeod’sfinished. I think I was waiting for the right time, and the right role. So when this character landed on my agent’s desk, she called me and the first words to come out of her mouth were, ‘You have to say yes.’ And after reading more and realising the depth of the character, and how well written it was, especially for a guest role, I called back and accepted it that same day.”
