Scarlett Johansson enters the Jurassic Park universe with Gareth Edwards' Jurassic World Rebirth, which reboots the franchise with a fresh chapter set in its dino-occupied universe. She is joined by Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey as experts on a mission to extract the DNA samples of the remaining prehistoric species for a greedy corporation.

Per the official synopsis, the film is set five years after the events of Chris Pratt-led Jurassic World Dominion (2022), which showed the humans and dinosaurs seemingly co-exist in peace. However, only half a decade down the line, the dinosaurs have gone nearly extinct since the Earth's environment has become largely inhospitable to them. The surviving creatures stay in isolated equatorial regions, suitable for their well-being.

Much like any other franchise installment, humans show up in their habitat, ruffle some feathers, and make things harder for themselves. Edwards' film is no different. It also raises ethical concerns about using the samples for exploitation or the greater good. The film is being theatrically released on July 2, 2025, by Universal Pictures.

At the end of Jurassic World Rebirth, Zora Bennett escapes the island with the samples, alive, along with her core team of Duncan Kincaid and Dr. Henry Loomis. Zora and Henry decide to use the samples for the better of humanity, instead of helping only a profit-driven pharma company.

In this latest chapter of the survival horror saga based on Michael Crichton's novels, Zora (Johansson) infiltrates the forbidden Ile Saint-Hubert island with Duncan (Ali) and paleontologist Henry (Bailey) on a secretive mission for Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) from ParkerGenix. It happens to be the space of an InGen research facility that worked on hybrid dinosaurs.

The team secures the required samples, but on their way out, they run into the terrifying hybrids. As it happens, a family of three: Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Teresa (Luna Blaise), and Isabella (Audrina Miranda), briefly escape getting killed after surviving an attack that overturns their boat. They cross paths with Zora's team, also struggling to survive through a series of attacks.

By the end of Jurassic World Rebirth, a handful of members of Zora's team die at the hands of dinosaurs, whether D-Rex or Mutadons, including Martin, who gets eaten whole shortly after he betrays the team to flee with the samples. So, his death seemingly represents the fate of someone driven purely by capitalistic notions.

The ending also shows Zora and Henry deciding to open-source the sample to help humanity at large. They admit that "science belongs to the whole world," and not only those who can afford its perks. Otherwise, the film is reportedly a standard franchise installment, relying more on the thrills of the last-minute escapes and a horrifying spectacle caused by its giant creatures.

As aforementioned, Zora's core team leaves the island alive along with the Delgado family members. It's the youngest of Delgados who helps them escape a tunnel and lock Mutadon inside. In the end, the film is about these victories with big emotional pay-offs as humans survive the dinosaurs' wrath. Whether that's when Isabella saves the day or when Duncan survives while drawing out a D-Rex.

Will there be a sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth? Here's what a franchise producer said

Gareth Edwards' Rebirth works as a standalone entry in the franchise, which resolves most of its arcs to satisfying conclusions. However, that doesn't mean that it won't receive a follow-up project. After all, despite a less-than-favorable response from the critics, the film is expected to be a highly profitable affair. So, the studio might want to pursue its success with another installment with the new cast.

There are no official updates about a sequel to Rebirth, but producer Frank Marshall shared a hopeful note during his conversation with the Empire magazine. Per Screenrant, Marshall said,

“We’re keeping both of those ideas in play, let’s say it that way. But, you know, it’s such a wonderful cast. I hope we can figure out what to do with them next."

Edwards added,

“I haven’t heard a single comment from anyone about sequels. But I’m a great believer in just trying to make a great film, and the rest will take care of itself. It feels like a blank canvas ahead.”

Hopefully, we'll get more updates about a potential installment in the franchise soon.
