Jurassic World Rebirth marks the return of David Koepp, who wrote the first two films in the franchise. Directed by Gareth Edwards, The film was released on July 2, 2025, after a screening at London's Leicester Square. The film is the seventh entry in the overall franchise. Its official synopsis, as per IMDb, reads:

Five years post-Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), an expedition braves isolated equatorial regions to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough.

The film features a new mutant dinosaur called Distortus Rex that has reportedly created buzz among the moviegoers. So let us explore more about this creature.

All about Distortus Rex in Jurassic World Rebirth

Jurassic World Rebirth features several dinosaurs including T-Rex and Dilophosaurus. However, the film's highlight is the fictional mutated dinosaur called Distortus Rex, or D-Rex, which lives on the island where the story unfolds. A D-Rex has six limbs, a wide frame, and is a perennially hungry carnivore.

The film's director, Gareth Edwards, spoke to Empire magazine about this mutant creature. He compared it to the work of HR Giger, a Swiss artist widely known for creating the Xenomorph in Ridley Scott's Alien.

Edwards said,

“It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had s*x with a Rancor.”

He added,

“It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out."

Industrial Light and Magic's David Vickery, who is the film's visual effects supervisor, said that the D-Rex looks as if an animal had been wrapped around a T-Rex. He said,

“Gareth wanted us to feel sorry for it as well as terrified, because its deformities have caused it some pain, and there’s an encumbrance to it.”

The D-Rex is the result of constant experimentation and mutation being done on the dinosaurs.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Gareth Edwards spoke about the possibility of a Jurassic World Rebirth sequel. He said,

"Maybe there's something in there. But no, we tried to make this movie like a single standalone. When I look back on sequels, trilogies that I love, what they all have in common is that the first movie was on its own, and then it became a high-class problem of how do we now make the others? I've genuinely never talked about it with anybody. Not a single conversation with David Koepp or Frank Marshall or Universal about a sequel. I think everyone's like (knocks on wood), all they want is for people to really like this movie and make the best film we can, and that's it. And then it's in the lap of the gods, everything else, really."

Edwards seems to suggest he imagined this one as a standalone film, so we might not get a sequel anytime soon.
