Eiichiro Oda has finally revealed more information about Scopper Gaban in One Piece. For years, his character remained shrouded in mystery. The only information we had was that he was an important member of the Pirate Kings era.
As the manga is set in the Final Saga of the series, we have been getting many revelations that have been a secret, and that is why we got a reintroduction of Gaban.
In volume 112 of One Piece, there is a section known as SBS (Shitsumon o Boshu Suru?), where Oda answers the long-awaited questions around famous topics that fans debate. In this SBS segment, Oda confirmed that Gaban served as the navigator of the Roger Pirates.

It is important to understand that having the information about the role of the crew translates to their legacy. Knowing that Gaban was the navigator implies he played a key role in charting the course to Laugh Tale.
This is a monumental revelation. In One Piece, a navigator isn’t just a ship’s GPS—they’re the strategic heart of the journey. Nami, for example, is often called the Straw Hats’ most essential member after Luffy himself.
It also sheds light on how the Roger Pirates managed the treacherous final island that even modern navigators can't reach without a completed Road Poneglyph set. Gaban, alongside Oden and the combined wisdom of the crew, likely played a huge part in deciphering the route.
Who is Scopper Gaban in One Piece?

His character was first introduced during a flashback scene. Gaban was shown to be wielding two axes, and the sheer confidence emitted by the character was more than enough to leave a lasting impression.
Moreover, his character stood out to be one of the three strongest members of the Rogers crew. For years, fans speculated about his role, his strength, and why he had seemingly vanished from the story.
Even though his character was absent for most of the story, he made a comeback during the Elbaf arc.
The Roger Pirates’ crew revisited

With the SBS revelations, Oda also confirmed other key roles in Roger’s crew:
1) Gol D. Roger – Captain
2) Silvers Rayleigh – First Mate
3) Scopper Gaban – Navigator
4) Crocus – Doctor
5) Donquino – Helmsman
6) Moon Isaac Jr. – Tactical Officer
7) Spencer – Intelligence Officer
8) Blumarine – Shipwright
9) Millet Pine - Interrogator
10) Rowing - Informant
11) Petermoo - Gunner
12) Jacksonbanner - Musician
This breakdown shows that, just like the Straw Hats, the Roger Pirates were a balanced and organized crew, each playing a distinct and important role. Their journey to Laugh Tale was a team effort; every role mattered.
Symbolism behind “Gold, Silver, Copper”
Eiichiro Oda had used an interesting trick; he used the names of metals as a narrative symbolism. We know gold, silver, and copper are used for the ranking system that translates to first, second, and third.
Within the Roger Pirate crew, the name of the captain was Gol D. Roger, which was highly misinterpreted as Gold Roger. Then comes Silvers Rayleigh, who was the captain's right hand, and finally, Gaban, who represents copper.
Just like the Straw Hats have Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, the Roger Pirates had their own trinity. Gaban in One Piece might not be as flashy as Roger or as famous as Rayleigh, but he was essential, and now fans are finally seeing his story unfold.
Final thoughts
Scooper Gaban in One Piece might not have been the loudest or the flashiest character from the Roger Pirates. It was thanks to his navigation skills that the crew was able to set sail and ultimately reach Laugh Tale. One thing we know for sure is that the ocean is unforgiving in its world, and it is always unpredictable.
Despite facing countless hardships, the Roger Pirates remain the only crew to have reached the island where One Piece is hidden. Gaban could be the greatest navigator alive. Also, now that he’s allied with the Straw Hat crew, there’s a strong possibility he could offer them a crucial clue to reach the final island.
